What are open educational resources?

A couple of months ago, I was asked by Chahira Nouira, E-Learning Assistant at the University of the United Nations in Bonn, Germany, to write a guest blog post about open educational resources (OER) (that was before I created this blog at UD). It has been largely inspired by the 2011 Educause Learning Initiative conference I attended in February. You can now read both parts of the post:
